This kit from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi captures the F-35B Lightning II in the markings of the squadron VMFA-121. It is a special release which, according to the name, additionally contains a painted pedestal for displaying the finished model, so you do not have to deal with a stand separately. The 1:72 scale is the most widespread for aircraft, so the model fits into a collection of modern combat aircraft. The number of parts and the content of the decal sheet are stated on the box and in the instructions.
The F-35B is the variant of the single-engine F-35 Lightning II combat aircraft intended for short takeoff and vertical landing. What sets it apart from the other versions is the lift fan behind the cockpit and the swiveling exhaust nozzle of the engine, thanks to which the aircraft can operate from short strips and from the decks of ships. The internal weapons bays and the shaping of the airframe grow out of the requirement for a reduced radar signature. VMFA-121 is a squadron of the United States Marine Corps, which was among the first users of the F-35B version in operational service.
The surface of the aircraft is defined by panel areas in differing shades of gray, not by one flat color, and it is exactly that which makes the result convincing. Proceed by spraying the base shade and then shading the individual panels gently by lightening or darkening them. Finish the cockpit before closing up the fuselage and glue the clear parts with a glue intended for canopies. On this version the lift fan and its doors can be shown open as well as closed; decide beforehand, because it also affects the choice of the model's pose on the pedestal. Lay a gloss coat down before the decals and, once dry, even everything out with a matte overcoat; on a low-reflectance finish a matte surface matters.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
