An injection-molded plastic kit of a two-seat jet aircraft in 1:72 scale. The release is devoted to a machine of the test and development unit of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force in the commemorative finish of 2021, with which the unit said goodbye to the Phantom. The number of parts, the extent of the decal sheet and the number of variants offered are stated on the box. What sets the box apart from the other Phantoms is precisely the scheme and the markings of the particular machine.
The F-4EJ is the Japanese licensed version of the twin-engine multirole F-4E Phantom II: a two-seat machine with a tandem cockpit, cranked wings and anhedral horizontal tail surfaces. The test and development unit used Phantoms for trials and measurement flights and for equipment tests. As operation of the type was being wound down, selected machines got a striking commemorative finish, which differs fundamentally from the ordinary service finish and tends to be tied to a particular year and occasion.
The commemorative scheme is the most demanding part of the build: spray with an airbrush through masks, work from the light shades to the dark ones and let each layer dry thoroughly before you move the masking. Finish the cockpit and mask the canopy before the primer. Lay the large-area decals onto a glossy intermediate coat and fix them with a decal softener, so that they sit into the engraved lines and onto curved surfaces as well. Assemble and paint the stores and the landing gear separately. Choose the final varnish according to the character of the scheme; with commemorative finishes usually a semi-matte one.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
