Decals for the 8.8 cm Flak 18/36 in 1:72 scale

A sheet of markings for a model of the German anti-aircraft gun of 8.8 cm caliber, in the Flak 18 and Flak 36 forms, in 1:72 scale. The subject of the sheet is tied to the service of these guns on the Eastern Front. On artillery the markings are often the only touch of color on an otherwise uniformly painted machine, so they decide how the finished work looks. Which variants the sheet offers is given in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The eighty-eight is one of the best-known German guns of the Second World War. It came about as an anti-aircraft gun with a long reach, but it became famous above all for fire on ground targets, for which its high muzzle velocity and flat trajectory suited it. It was towed on a two-axle trailer and lowered into its firing position onto a cruciform carriage whose arms folded out to the sides. The later Flak 36 differed from the older Flak 18 among other things in its sectional barrel, where only the worn section could be replaced instead of the whole barrel.

How to apply the sheet

• Even out the area under the decal with gloss varnish; silvering shows up easily on a matte surface.
• Cut the subject out close to the printing and dip it in lukewarm water for a moment.
• As soon as it releases from the backing paper, move it onto the part and straighten it with a soft brush.
• In 1:72 scale the subjects are small, so work with tweezers and on a damp surface, over which they can still be slid.
• Once it has dried, go over the whole thing with matte varnish so that the edge of the carrier film disappears.
