About product

Imperial Russian roundels, masking set 1:72

Cut self-adhesive masks from the Czech manufacturer Armycast for aircraft models in 1:72 scale. The set is intended for spraying the circular national insignia used by the Imperial Russian Air Service. The insignia is applied in paint through the mask straight onto the paintwork of the model, so no carrier film is left on the surface when it is finished and the edge is sharp.

The insignia and its period

The Imperial Russian Air Service took shape shortly before the First World War and its machines carried a circular roundel in the national colors, that is, in a combination of white, blue and red. These were concentric circles whose execution and size were in no way strictly unified — at a time when the flying units were only being built up, the markings differed by manufacturer, by repair shop and by unit. Check the exact arrangement of the colors and the proportions of the rings, therefore, against period photographs or a color profile of the machine you are building.

How to use the masks

A circular insignia is rewarding from the point of view of masking: it has no sharp corners in which paint readily runs under. Even so, the basics hold — apply it to fully cured, smooth and degreased paintwork, press the edge down and spray thin coats straight down from above. On a multicolor roundel you work layer by layer: the outer circle is sprayed first, then it is masked and the color of the next ring is applied. Let the paint set between the steps. Roundels on the fabric covering of old aircraft tended to be irregular, so a small imperfection here does the look more good than harm.

Who the set suits

  • Builders of First World War aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want the insignia sprayed, not applied
  • Builds with fabric covering, where a decal settles badly
  • Anyone interested in less usual historical markings

The package holds masks only. The model, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For the era of Imperial Russia, that is, mainly for aircraft of the First World War. The manufacturer offers the Soviet red stars as separate sets.

Layer by layer. The color of the outer circle goes on first, then the center is masked and the next ring is sprayed. Let the paint set between the steps.

The arrangement differed on period machines. Check it against a profile or a photograph of the particular aircraft.
