1:72 IS-1/KV-85

IS-1 and KV-85 decals 1:72 (Colibri Decals)

This is a decal sheet, not a model. It supplies the markings for models of the Soviet IS-1 and KV-85 heavy tanks in 1:72 scale. The number of marking variants, the dimensions of the sheet and the division of the motifs between the two types are given on the packaging of the sheet. The sheet is intended for kits of the types named, which several manufacturers make in this scale.

The real subject

The KV-85 arose from mounting a turret with an 85 mm gun on the hull of the lightened KV-1S heavy tank. It was a stopgap solution meant to raise the firepower of the heavy tanks quickly until a new design matured. The IS-1, also designated the IS-85, was already an entirely new heavy tank with the same main weapon but with a different conception of the hull and distribution of the armor; a variant with a larger-caliber gun followed on from it. Both types were built only briefly at the turn of 1943 and 1944 and in small numbers, which makes them an interesting and fairly rare subject.

Application tips

The base under the decals must be smooth and gloss, otherwise a silvery veil will be left around the film. Cut the motifs out close to the image, soak them in warm water and let them stand until the backing releases. Once they are in place, draw the water off with absorbent paper and use a softener, so that the decal is drawn down to the rivets, the welds and the engraved lines. Once dry, varnish over with a matte varnish and only then apply washes, dust pigments and traces of wear; on heavy tanks it is above all dust on the fenders and wear on the running gear that look convincing.
