About product

Armory 1:72 Nashorn and Hummel, widened 56 cm Ostketten tracks

This is not a kit of the vehicle but a set of resin tracks in 1:72 scale. The 56 cm figure gives the width of the track on the real machine, not the scale. Tracks of the Ostketten type, that is the so-called eastern tracks, are intended for models of the Nashorn and Hummel self-propelled guns, which shared a combined chassis derived from the Pz.Kpfw.III and Pz.Kpfw.IV tanks.

The real subject

Both the Nashorn and the Hummel were among the lightly armored self-propelled guns with an open fighting superstructure built on a common chassis. The Nashorn carried a powerful anti-tank gun, the Hummel a howitzer for indirect fire. Both vehicles were heavier and longer than the base tank, so widened tracks were all the more useful on them: on soft ground they lowered the ground pressure and improved mobility.

Building and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry through. Cut the casting blocks away with a fine razor saw in sections rather than all at once, so that the track is not deformed. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Before gluing, lay the track dry on the running gear and check both the length and the way it wraps around the drive sprocket; with widened tracks you usually need to check the clearance at the fenders. Leave a slight sag in the upper run. Painting is easier off the model: a dark base, brown and rusty coats and finally metallic pigment on the running surface and the guide horns. On these vehicles a more pronounced application of mud on the lower run and in the space between the wheels works well.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Nashorn or the Hummel in 1:72 scale
  • builders of vehicles on the combined Pz.Kpfw.III and IV chassis
  • makers of dioramas with muddy or winter terrain
  • more experienced modelers used to working with resin

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

These are widened, so-called eastern tracks, which were fitted to German vehicles because of deep mud and snow. The greater width lowered the ground pressure.

It is not. It is the width of the track on the real vehicle. The set is in 1:72 scale.

The set is intended for the Nashorn and the Hummel, that is for the combined chassis derived from the Pz.Kpfw.III and IV. On other vehicles it is a good idea to dry-fit the track first.

Cut the casting blocks away with a fine razor saw gradually, in sections, and support the track as you do so, so that it does not bend.
