About product

MiG-15bis Korean War in 1:72 scale from Academy

It is a classic injection-molded plastic kit of an aircraft in the most widespread aviation scale, 1:72. The manufacturer is the South Korean company Academy. The words Korean War in the name denote a particular boxing, that is, the focus of the decal schemes and the contents of the box on machines deployed in that conflict. The contents of the package are stated on the box.

The real subject

The MiG-15 was one of the first jet fighter aircraft to be built in series with a swept wing. The bis version was a developmentally later guise with a stronger engine derived from an imported British design with a centrifugal compressor, which showed in the rate of climb and the ceiling. The armament was gun armament and deliberately heavy, combining one cannon of larger caliber and two smaller ones, which made the aircraft an effective weapon against large targets but put demands on the accuracy of the shooting. The design was simple, sturdy and easy to produce, thanks to which the type entered service in many countries and was built in license versions in Czechoslovakia as well. From outside you will recognize the aircraft by the barrel-shaped fuselage with the circular air intake in the nose, the high-set tail surfaces and the markedly swept wing with aerodynamic fences.

Building and painting tips

The critical place in this configuration is the air intake duct running from the nose, which is visible when seen from the front; it pays to fill and sand it before the fuselage is closed and to spray it in a light color. Because of the engine at the rear, weight is usually needed in the nose, otherwise the model will settle on its tail; try the weight out with a dry assembly before gluing the halves of the fuselage. Finish the cockpit and close it over, also before the fuselage is closed. A natural metal surface, typical of a number of machines of that time, calls for a flawlessly smoothed base, best a gloss black or gray primer, onto which the metallic paint is applied in thin layers; individual panels can be set apart by masking and a slightly different shade of metal. Before the decals use gloss varnish, and after them matte or satin according to the scheme chosen.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers focused on the beginnings of jet aviation
  • Builders of collections in the uniform 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in practicing a natural metal surface
  • Moderately advanced modelers and more experienced beginners

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Above all in its more powerful engine, which showed in the rate of climb and the ceiling. Small changes to the airframe and the equipment went with it.

The number of decal schemes is stated on the box.

With aircraft that have the engine in the rear part of the fuselage it usually pays off. Try the balance out with a dry assembly before gluing the fuselage.

Apply a gloss primer onto a perfectly smoothed base and metallic paint over it in thin layers. Set the panels apart by masking and a slightly different shade.
