About product

1:72 Mignet Flying Flea — a kit in 1:72 scale

A kit of the tiny Mignet HM.14 aircraft, to which the nicknames Pou du Ciel and, in English-speaking countries, Flying Flea became attached. In 1:72 scale it is a genuinely small model — the real subject itself was among the smallest piloted aircraft of its time, so the finished model takes up a fraction of the shelf space of an ordinary fighter. That is precisely what makes it interesting: among models of combat aircraft it comes across as an utter opposite and will draw the attention of everyone who walks past the display case.

The real subject

The aircraft was designed in the 1930s by the French designer Henri Mignet with the aim that even someone without an aeronautical education could build it from published plans in an ordinary workshop. The structure is therefore of wood and fabric-covered, with a tandem arrangement of two wings, one above and behind the other. The controls were deliberately simplified — instead of the classic combination of ailerons and elevator, the front wing was tilted. The machines arose in Europe by the hundreds and became a symbol of interwar amateur flying; after a series of accidents in the middle of the 1930s the design went through modifications and operation was temporarily restricted.

Building and painting tips

On such a small model cleanness of work is what decides. Cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel and level the mating surfaces with a file rather than with coarse paper. Glue the supports and struts between the wings according to the drawing, dry first, and only then fix them, otherwise the model will twist and the wings will not be parallel. Before painting a thin primer is in order, on which unfinished joints are revealed. A fabric-covered structure calls for a matte surface and a fine suggestion of the ribs, not for gloss. Small models will take only very restrained weathering.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of unconventional and curious aircraft
  • For modelers who enjoy interwar amateur aviation
  • For builders of collections in a uniform 1:72 scale
  • For patient modelers — a small scale forgives little

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A tiny amateur-built aircraft of Henri Mignet from the 1930s with a wooden fabric-covered structure and two wings, one above and behind the other.

The manufacturer otherwise specializes in resin castings. The material of the parts is stated on the packaging of the kit; it is better to check the form before buying.

Rather not. In 1:72 scale the subject is very small and aligning the wings and struts calls for patience and a steady hand.
