YELLOW-BROWN OPS stands between an ocher and a brown in the position equipment has after a few days in the field. It is therefore not the color a machine left the factory in, but the one it brought back from the road. It is used on the undersides of vehicles, on fenders, on wheels and tracks, on the lower parts of tents and crates and everywhere a clean factory finish would look improbable.
In layering it works best as the last link. It is applied onto a finished and dried coat heavily thinned and is rubbed into the surface rather than laid on, so that it stays in the recesses, around rivets and along welds. The excess is taken off with a brush dampened with water, while the paint has not set completely.
The amount of dirt is a matter of taste and it tends to be better to add it in small amounts. A coat once settled is removed with more difficulty than it is applied, and an over-dusted model loses the readability of its shapes. The proven procedure is to start at the wheels and the lower edges, step back and only then decide how much dust gets higher up.
As a full-fledged opaque color the shade stands up too. In unthinned form it gives a base for wooden crates, ropes or clay walls on a diorama, where its earthiness without a green or a red pull is useful.
