Decals for four twin-boom Lockheed P-38 fighters from the late phase of the war in the Pacific. The first of two sets, each aircraft with nose art of its own.
Responsibility details are not available.
A layout with two booms and the pilot's nacelle in the middle looked eccentric, but in the Pacific theater it had exactly what was needed: two engines over a wide ocean, a range measured in thousands of kilometers and concentrated fire in the axis of the machine, which did not call for convergence as wing-mounted guns do. That is precisely why the two highest-scoring American fighter pilots of the war flew this type.
The late J and L versions differed substantially from the earlier machines: they got dive recovery flaps, boosted ailerons and more powerful cooling. Only those modifications made the aircraft an opponent that dared take on maneuvering combat at low altitude.
The sheet carries the national insignia, numbers and nose art for the four machines named. It is transferred the wet way: after a short dip the film releases from the paper and slides onto the model. It proves best to work one piece at a time and to press the film down with a soft cloth so that no bubble is left under it. The model of the aircraft has to be obtained separately; it is not in the package.
