The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-seat fighter of the 1930s and one of the first production cantilever low-wing monoplanes with retractable landing gear. You recognize it by its short, barrel-shaped fuselage, the wide cowling of its radial engine and a cockpit set well back. The very short fuselage made the machine an agile but sensitive and difficult opponent. The nickname Rata was given to the aircraft by the opposing side in the Spanish Civil War, while the Republican side called it the Mosca instead. The phrase Stalin's Falcons is a period name for Soviet airmen, not a designation of a version.
This is a decal sheet on its own, listed for 1:72 scale and for the I-16 type. Which particular machines, national insignia, numbers and lettering it holds, and exactly where the subjects belong, is given by the manufacturer in the instructions for the sheet. In this scale the subjects are very small, they are handled with tweezers and it pays to apply them one at a time.
Coat the area under the decal with gloss varnish first, otherwise air is trapped under the film and a matte pale frame stays around the subject. Trim the subject as closely as you can and soak it in lukewarm water until it starts to release from the backing. Nudge it onto the model with a soft brush, push the excess water out with a cloth from the center toward the edges and let it dry thoroughly. A decal softener will help the film settle onto riveting and small raised details. Seal the finished work with varnish.
