R-33E — a long-range guided air-to-air missile, 2 pieces, 1:72 is a resin armament set from Advanced Modeling. It is not an airplane kit but underwing armament for completing a model.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a resin detail set of aircraft armament, not an aircraft model. According to the name, the package contains two guided R-33E missiles in 1:72 scale. Resin technology casts the slender body of the missile in one piece, without the longitudinal seam that on split plastic parts calls for laborious sanding and restoring of the shape. The sharply drawn control fins and lifting surfaces are among the most visible details on weapons of this class, so the difference from the armament in a kit is pronounced at close quarters.
The R-33 is a Soviet long-range guided air-to-air missile with semi-active radar homing, developed as the main armament of the heavy interceptor MiG-31. On that machine the missiles are carried in semi-recessed stations under the fuselage. The designation with a final E corresponds to the export version. Weapons of this category were intended to destroy targets at great distance — typically bombers and cruise missiles — and were complemented by shorter-range weapons on the wing pylons.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry. Cut the casting block off with a fine-toothed saw and sand it down so that the circular cross-section of the body is preserved; when sanding resin, protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Painting: primer, a light base shade for the body, a radome set apart on the head and colored bands according to the documentation. A thin flowing wash will bring out the transitions between sections and the roots of the control fins. With underwing armament it pays to keep weathering on a leash — overdone grime looks unconvincing.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and a base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
