An injection-molded short-run kit in 1:72 scale from Avis, released as a limited edition. The subject is the Short S.1 Cockle, a very small British single-seat flying boat of the mid-1920s. It is a type that hardly ever appears in the modeling range, so the set fills a gap for collectors of the beginnings of British marine aviation. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
Short Brothers built the Cockle as an attempt at the smallest possible flying boat that would carry one person. It was interesting above all for its hull: it was among the first British flying boats with an all-metal hull at a time when hulls were built largely of wood. Above the hull it carried a wing with a pair of small engines whose power was at the limit of usefulness, so getting off the water was difficult and the machine remained at the trials stage. That is exactly what makes it a rewarding curiosity for a display case: it is unusually small, unusually laid out and different at first glance from everything else on the shelf.
Short-run plastic means heavier sprue gates and the need to clean up the mating surfaces; dry-fit every part first. The hull of a flying boat has a pronounced lower edge, so run the joint of the two halves carefully and re-engrave any place you have sanded through. Set the struts between the hull and the wing only after the first joint has cured, otherwise the whole assembly will twist. The metal hull of the real subject invites a smooth gloss finish, which calls for a perfect base. The model shows off well on a simple sheet of water made of clear resin or acrylic gel, where it is enough to suggest a calm surface and a wake behind the hull.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
