About product

Quickwheel 1:72 StuG III Ausf. B — road wheel masks

The set holds pre-cut masks that are applied to the rubber tire bands of the road wheels. Once the wheel is sprayed over and the mask lifted off, a sharp border is left between the color of the rim and the dark rubber. In 1:72 scale that is an essential difference, because a line painted by hand on a wheel a few millimeters across tends to be irregular.

What makes the running gear of this subject special

The StuG III builds on the chassis of the Panzer III tank, and that uses torsion bar suspension with a row of fairly small road wheels on each side rather than the interleaved arrangement of the later German types. The wheels follow one another in a single plane, they are identical and there are many of them, so masking means a series of identical small circles in which any deviation between neighboring wheels catches the eye. Return rollers run above them, which have rubber tire bands as well, only smaller. The drive sprocket at the front and the idler wheel at the rear, by contrast, are all-steel and have no rubber rim, so they are painted differently from the road wheels. The Ausf. B is also an early variant on which the shape of the drive sprocket and the idler wheel changed against the later series, which is a reason to stick to the particular version when choosing masks.

How to work with the masks

First spray the whole running gear in the base color of the vehicle, let it cure and only then fit the masks. Press from the center toward the circumference, so no air is left under the edge. Spray the dark rubber shade thinly; richness is achieved by repetition, not by a heavy coat. Lift the mask off while the paint has freshly dried. It is sensible to finish the wheels before the hull is closed up and access to them becomes harder.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building German armored equipment in 1:72
  • those who want a clean rubber-to-rim transition with no painting in by hand
  • builders who finish the running gear before closing up the hull
  • anyone after a faster routine on models with a large number of wheels

The set is an accessory for painting. Paints, glue and the kit itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It lets the rubber tire bands of the road wheels be painted with a sharp border, without your having to paint the line with a brush.

The set is cut for the Trumpeter kit. With another manufacturer the wheel diameters and their spacing differ, so check the match beforehand.

On this chassis those are all-steel and have no rubber rim. The set deals with wheels that have a rubber tire band, but the exact contents of the package are not stated here.

Yes, it is markedly simpler. You can then reach the individual wheels from every side.
