A themed sheet of decals in 1:72 scale from the British brand Xtradecal, put together as a cross-section of the markings of one Royal Air Force squadron over the span of years given in the name. It is neither a kit nor a publication, but a printed sheet meant for finished painted models. Which types of aircraft and which periods the sheet covers is given on the packaging and in the instructions supplied. Because it is a cross-section sheet, we recommend comparing what the manufacturer gives on the packaging before buying with the models you have under way.
Squadron markings form a layer of their own in the Royal Air Force. Besides the national insignia and the serial numbers, the machines also carried unit codes, the squadron badge and various colored bands or symbols on the fuselage and the tail surfaces. Their form changed over the decades along with the types of aircraft, with the regulations on the visibility of markings and with the mode of operation. A cross-section sheet therefore offers the markings of machines from very different periods, from propeller types to later jet equipment.
With themed sheets the order of work is easily forgotten. Decals belong only on cured gloss varnish, never directly on fresh paint, and conversely the weathering, that is washes, filters and pigments, comes only after them. The recommended order is paint, gloss varnish, decals, a further coat of gloss varnish, weathering and finally a matte or semi-gloss top coat. If washes reach an unprotected decal, they may run under it or damage its edges. Always leave the varnish enough time to cure between the individual steps.
The package contains the decal sheet only. The kit, paints and varnishes are not part of it.
