A decal sheet from the Hungarian manufacturer HAD models for a model of the MiG-29 fighter as operated by the Hungarian Air Force in the period when it was already using designations and markings to the NATO standards. This is stand-alone decal material, not a kit or an accessory part: the decals are applied to a finished painted model. The 1:48 scale is the most widespread one for fighters and offers enough room even for the small technical lettering.
The MiG-29 is a twin-engine fighter with a markedly rounded, blended fuselage, a pair of vertical tails and side air intakes fitted with hinged doors to keep debris from being ingested while taxiing. The Hungarian Air Force operated these machines in the single-seat and the two-seat trainer form alike, and after the change to the new standards their markings were revised, lettering and unit designations included. At the same time these aircraft gradually moved away from contrasting camouflage toward less conspicuous finishes, so the look of the markings themselves changes as well.
The fuselage of the MiG-29 has many rounded surfaces and transitions where a decal easily forms a fold. The surface must be glossy but not too fresh, so that the decal does not sink into it. Lay the large items in the middle of an area and press the water out from the center outward; use the softener only once the decal sits right. On the transitions between the fuselage and the wing root extensions, let the softener work repeatedly in smaller doses. Markings on the less contrasting gray finish tend to be muted, so once they have dried do not drown them in a thick coat of varnish: a thin matte or semi-gloss final coat is enough to unify the surface and suppress the edges of the carrier film.
