A resin accessory set that is added to a finished model of the eight-wheeled BTR-80 armored personnel carrier in 1:35 scale. The castings capture improvised protection stacked from bags filled with sand, as crews put it together themselves on Ukrainian vehicles. The shape of the casting follows the faces of the hull on which the set is to seat, so it keeps the worn, sagging character of sandbag cloth.
The BTR-80 is an amphibious eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier with all-wheel drive, a small one-man turret with machine gun armament and side doors between the second and third axles. It followed on from the older BTR-70 and remained in use with a number of armies including the Ukrainian one. The vehicle's own armor protects mainly against small arms rounds and splinters, so the most varied additional layers appear in service, from welded frames to plain sandbags stacked on the front and sides. A cloth bag bends under its own weight and presses against the neighboring bags, which is a rewarding subject for cast resin: a soft, irregular shape is only hard to form in plastic.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap first, so that the remains of the mold release agent are removed from the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-bladed saw or a cutter, level the surface with a file and sand with your airways protected. Try the seating dry, sand the mating surfaces to the shape of the hull and only then glue with super glue. Resin needs a primer, as otherwise the paint holds poorly on a smooth surface. Sandbag cloth looks convincing when the base sand shade is lightened with a dry brush on the edges of the seams and folds while the hollows are pulled down with a dark wash. The transition between the bags and the armor is finally unified by dust pigments applied from the top down.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
