About product

Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero-Sen - a COBI clip-together kit, Historical Collection

The set belongs to the Historical Collection range, to the part devoted to the Second World War. It is a clip-together brick kit, not a classic plastic model: the parts fit into each other and hold mechanically, and the model comes about directly during the build according to the enclosed instructions. The colors and the national insignia are given by the finish of the individual parts and by the printing applied directly on them, so once it is completed nothing more is finished off.

The real subject

The Mitsubishi A6M, designated Reisen in Japanese and commonly known as the Zero, was a single-engine carrier fighter aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The A6M2 version was among the early production variants and became famous for its combination of a very long range, exceptional agility and the low weight of its structure. For those qualities, however, a price was paid in weak armor protection and the absence of self-sealing fuel tanks, which showed itself as soon as its opponents went over to tactics using speed and rate of climb instead of a turning fight. The aircraft was driven by a radial engine and carried mixed cannon and machine gun armament; for operation from aircraft carriers some variants had folding wingtips.

Tips for building and display

Put the fuselage together section by section and finish each one whole before you go on to the next. Fit the wings symmetrically and fully home, so that the model stands in line and one wing panel does not droop. The engine section with the propeller comes at the end; do not turn the propeller against resistance. The finished model is stable and stands up to ordinary carrying about - take it by the fuselage, not by the wing. Display it on a flat surface or in a display case and wipe the dust off with a soft brush.

Who the kit is for

  • Anyone interested in Japanese naval aviation of the Second World War
  • Collectors of the Historical Collection range
  • Those who want a model finished as soon as it is built
  • Fans of carrier fighter aircraft

The kit is supplied unassembled. Once completed according to the instructions the model is finished and calls for no further work.
