About product

Bust 1:10 Freies Indien Legion (Historic Figure Series, Abteilung 502)

This is a bust, that is the upper body of a figure in 1:10 scale from the Historic Figure Series line of the maker Abteilung 502. It is neither a kit of equipment nor a whole figure: the bust captures the head, the shoulders and the chest, so all the attention goes into the face, the head covering and the upper part of the dress. The 1:10 scale gives areas large enough for work with shadows, smooth transitions and the structure of cloth to be seen on them.

The subject

The real subject is a member of the unit Legion Freies Indien from the period of the Second World War, that is a formation put together from Indian volunteers. Check the particular form of the uniform, the shades and the placement of any collar patches or insignia against the maker's references before painting.

Assembly and painting tips

First assemble the bust dry and check how the head seats into the neck and the shoulders. Fill the gap that results with putty and sand it over, because at this scale no layer of paint will hide it. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that no mold release agent or grease from your hands is left on the surface, and spray a thin primer. That will at the same time reveal any remains of parting lines, which are better dealt with now than after the first layers. Mix the flesh shade according to the subject: darker skin needs a different base from light European skin, keep it in a warm tone and lead the shadows toward a red-brown rather than a gray. Build the uniform up in layers from a shaded base toward the lights, and unify the textile at the end with a glaze. Busts are painted predominantly with a brush, and oil paints suit smooth transitions on large areas well, only count on longer drying between the steps.

Who the bust is for

  • For figure painters who want a large scale and room for the detail of a face
  • For collectors of historical busts for a display case
  • For modelers practicing transitions, skin and the structure of textile
  • For more experienced builders, because a bust calls for clean preparation of the surface

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, a base and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a bust, that is the upper body. It captures the head, the shoulders and the chest, not the whole figure. That is precisely why so much emphasis is placed on the face and the upper part of the dress with busts.

That the figure is reduced ten times against reality, which is a usual and fairly large format with busts. The details are clearly visible, but it also means that a badly sanded gap or a coarse transition of colors will not be hidden.

No. It is supplied unpainted and to be assembled, and paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

The material and the number of parts are stated by the maker for the particular bust. Busts at this scale are commonly cast in resin and made up of several parts.
