About product

1:10 Kampfgruppe Officer Russia 1943 Ostwind - a resin bust from Young Miniatures

A portrait bust of an officer in winter dress, cast in modeling resin in 1:10 scale. The Ostwind subtitle points to a winter scene and the sculptural treatment matches it: heavy layered clothing, a collar pulled up to the face and a face exposed to the frost. For a modeler it is above all a task of cool skin shades and of the texture of thick cloth.

The casting and preparation before painting

The casting is divided so that the undercut surfaces under the collar and the headgear fit into the mold. Wash the parts first in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry; unwashed mold release agent is the most common reason why the paint comes away in time. Cut the casting remnants off with a saw, level the surfaces with a file, align them dry and only then bond them with super glue. Fill the seam and sand it back wet. A thin primer unifies the surface and makes visible the unfinished places that are easy to correct now and hard once painted.

The painting task

A winter portrait is painted differently from a summer one: the skin needs a cooler base into which warmth is brought locally on the cheeks, the nose and the ears, and fine bluish shadows into the eye sockets and under the chin. Build the transitions with heavily thinned paint in many layers. The eyes, the lips and the stubble belong at the end. Heavy woolen cloth and fur trim call for a dry brush and softer, less contrasting highlights than smooth canvas; leather webbing, on the other hand, will take a light sheen and sharper rubbed places. Pick the metal out with a pigment or a fine dry brush. Keep the weathering matter-of-fact: a dark wash into the folds, dust on the lower areas, no needless effects. Fit the bust to its base only once the painting is finished.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters practicing cool skin shades
  • Modelers who want to master the texture of wool and fur
  • Collectors of portrait busts in a large scale
  • More experienced modelers working with resin

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and putty are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The base of the skin tends to be cooler and warmth is brought in only locally on the nose, the ears and the cheeks. The shadows shift into blue so that the figure looks chilled.

With a dry brush in the direction of the hair and with softer transitions than on cloth. It pays to leave the base darker and to add the highlights carefully.

The assembly is short, but a portrait in a large scale forgives little. We recommend at least a basic experience of painting figures.

Yes. Cement for plastic does not soften resin, so the joint will not hold. Use cyanoacrylate and level the surfaces before gluing.
