Jagdtiger Sd.Kfz. 186, Porsche production, 1:35 (Takom): a kit of the rare variant of the heaviest series-built combat vehicle of World War II, with Zimmerit, a metal barrel, photo-etch and workable individual track links.
Responsibility details are not available.
Plastic kit of the German Jagdtiger heavy tank destroyer in 1:35 scale, specifically in the rare Porsche production variant. The kit has Zimmerit (the anti-magnetic coating) molded directly onto the parts, so you do not have to apply it laboriously by hand. It also contains a metal barrel, photo-etched parts, decals for several marking options and workable individual track links, not a rubber band.
Careful, this is not the ordinary Jagdtiger. The vehicle was built in two suspension variants and they look visibly different. The more common Henschel suspension has nine road wheels per side and internal torsion bars. The Porsche suspension, which this kit builds, has only eight road wheels per side in a completely different layout, with external paired torsion bars and smaller wheels. Only a few examples were built (of the order of ten), so it is a rarity that is rewarding for a modeler. The ordinary version with the Henschel suspension exists as a large-scale 1:16 kit from Trumpeter.
The Jagdtiger was the heaviest series-built combat vehicle of World War II, weighing around 72 tons. In its fixed casemate it carried the huge 128 mm PaK 44 gun, with which it could penetrate practically any Allied tank at long range. Only roughly eighty were built. Its weight, however, was literally destroying it: the chassis, the transmission and the final drive were overloaded, the machine often broke down or got stuck, and a considerable part of the losses did not arise in combat, as crews destroyed and abandoned their vehicles after a breakdown or when they ran out of fuel. The variant with the Porsche running gear also put a much greater load on each wheel, so it wore out faster.
First finish and paint the running gear: on the Porsche variant the wheel layout differs from the ordinary Jagdtiger, so it pays to follow the instructions especially closely. Clean up the molded Zimmerit only gently and do not sand it down, as you would lose its texture. Build up the workable track links on a flat surface so that the track sits correctly. Use a thin plastic cement, attach the metal barrel with cyanoacrylate (plastic cement does not hold on metal) and degrease it and spray it with a primer before painting. The Zimmerit coating takes a wash and drybrushing beautifully, so build the weathering up in layers; on the running gear and the lower hull, add pigments for mud and dust.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
