About product

1:10 Stormtrooper Battle of Somme 1916 - a resin bust from Young Miniatures

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures with an assault infantryman from the fighting on the Somme in 1916 as its subject. The bust is not a kit in the usual sense: once the casting has been cleaned up and aligned, all the rest of the work belongs to the painter. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The sculpting

First World War subjects are painted differently from later ones. Coarse woolen fabrics, heavy seams and leather webbing predominate, that is, surfaces with a strong texture and a low sheen. The face in this period tends to be rendered sharply, with deeper lines and a tense expression, which plays into the painting: deep grooves hold the shadow by themselves and only need to be supported with a glaze.

Preparing the casting and painting

The procedure is the standard one for resin: wash off the mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw, align the parts, fill and sand the seams, then a thin primer. On a large bust, two or three light coats of primer are better than one heavy one.

Painting: start with the eyes and the skin, while the head is freely accessible. Build the skin on a mid tone and only then add shadows in the eye sockets, under the cheekbones and at the chin; the result should look weather-beaten, not dirty. Paint the wool of the field uniform matte and bring the texture out with a dry brush over the edges of the folds. Set the leather of the webbing apart with a higher sheen. Apply the dust and mud of the trench environment from the bottom up, in weak coats and only in the places they would realistically reach, that is, on the shoulders, in the folds and at the collar. Pin the finished bust to a base and try the angle of the head against the body, if the division of the casting allows it.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters interested in First World War subjects
  • Collectors of portrait busts in a large scale
  • Modelers who want to practice painting woolen fabrics
  • Exhibitors looking for a striking piece on its own

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, brushes and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The face. In 1:10 scale every transition of shade shows, so the skin has to be built from thin coats and glazes, not from one covering coat.

Yes. On smooth resin the paint holds badly without a primer and rubs off during handling. Before the primer, wash the casting free of the remains of mold release agent.

Super glue. It pays to align the joints of the head and the shoulders dry first and to fill any seam before painting.
