Young Miniatures 1:10 The Chosin Few - Battle of Jang-Jin Reservoir, USMC, Korea 1950 is a resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale. The weight of the work lies in painting a face marked by frost and in setting the winter gear apart by color.
Responsibility details are not available.
A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. It is not a kit in the ordinary sense: the number of parts is small and the building takes a fraction of the time compared with the painting. The casting is supplied unpainted and its value is decided under the brush, by the modeler's ability to build up the shades of the skin and to tell the materials of the winter clothing apart.
The subject shows a US Marine in the winter field. For a painter that means two different tasks side by side: a chilled face and bulky layered clothing. Skin behaves differently in frost than in an ordinary portrait: it carries a cooler undertone, more strongly flushed cheekbones, nose and ears, and reddened rims to the eyelids. The fabric of a winter parka is grainy and matte, the fur trim reflects light softly and irregularly, whereas the metal buckles and clasps on the gear need a sharp contrast. It is precisely the difference between matte cloth and polished metal that makes the bust legible from a distance.
First wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water so that the remains of mold release agent disappear, as the primer will not hold without that. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, and never break them off. Fill the parting seams with modeling putty and sand them away with fine paper while protecting your airways; resin dust should not be inhaled. Join the parts with super glue. Then comes a thin primer in two or three misting passes, ideally in a light shade under the skin and a darker one under the gear. Build the skin in many thinned layers from a mid tonal value toward the highlights and shadows, not in covering coats all at once. Paint the eyes as the first part of the face, while you still have access; never make the white of the eye pure white, but a broken grayish tone. Deal with the hair and the stubble using a glaze and a dry brush. Bring the cloth out with filters and a fine edge highlight, and the metal parts at the end with weathering and suggested wear. Pin the finished bust to a base only once the painting is complete.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
