A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures with an American paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division in Normandy in 1944 as its subject. The casting is cleaned up, aligned and prepared for paint; everything else is painting. The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted and assumes experience with figures.
A paratrooper subject is one of the most rewarding to paint: a coarse cotton jacket with many pockets and folds, straps, buckles and the contrast between soft cloth and the hard elements of the gear. The face in this subject usually has a tense, concentrated expression, so it pays to spend time on the eyes and the modeling around the mouth.
First wash the casting free of mold release agent, then cut the casting blocks off with a saw and align the parts dry. Fill and sand the seams, because they would stand out under the paint. Then comes a thin primer in several light coats.
Painting: build the skin by layering and do the eyes before you fit the head. Paint the cotton jacket matte, lighten the edges of the folds and support the seams with a thin glaze. Set the straps and the webbing apart by shade as well as by sheen. If the casting carries a camouflage pattern or a cloth cover, paint it by hand with irregular strokes, because a regular pattern gives away the stencil. Keep the weathering restrained: dust in the folds, fine wear on the edges of the gear, no overall grubbiness. Finally pin the finished bust to a base.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, brushes and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
