A bust of a US Marine from the Pacific theater, cast in modeling resin in 1:10 scale. Sculpturally it is a combination of a tanned face, soft canvas headgear and the coarser cloth of the uniform, that is, three different surfaces in a small space. Telling them apart is the main task, not the building itself.
The casting is divided so that undercut details fit into the mold; the head and the torso come separately. Before any paint, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water, as residual mold release agent will reliably destroy adhesion. Cut the casting gates off with a saw, level the mating surfaces and align them dry, and only then bond them with super glue. Fill the resulting seam under the collar with modeling putty and sand it back wet. Then comes a thin primer, ideally in a light shade, on which imperfections are visible at once and easier to correct now than after painting.
Skin at this scale will take a great deal of work: start with a mid tone, add warm shadows into the eye sockets and under the cheekbones, then highlights on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and the chin. A tanned look is built with glazes, not with one ready-made shade. Draw the eyes, the eyebrows and the stubble only at the end. The canvas headgear and the uniform hold a matte surface, and it pays to suggest the faded areas on the shoulders and on the tops of the folds. Bring out the metal buckles, studs and rings with a dry brush. Keep the weathering restrained: a dark wash into the seams and fine dust into the lower areas. Fit the bust to its base only once the painting is finished.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and putty are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
