About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 Viking Warrior - resin bust

A portrait bust in modeling resin in 1:10 scale from the Young Miniatures studio, with a Norse warrior as its subject. It is supplied unpainted and is not built like a model: putting the parts together is a matter of minutes, whereas preparing the surface and the painting take up most of the time. This subject rests on a combination of a strong face, rich hair and beard and materials that differ a great deal from one another: metal, leather, coarsely woven cloth. The hardest part to paint is getting depth into the beard without filling the modeling with paint; it pays to paint it with thinly diluted paint in several coats.

Preparing the casting

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, because resin holds mold release agent from the mold and neither paint nor primer will stick to it. Cut the casting gates off with a sharp scalpel and finish the surfaces with wet sandpaper; protect your airways while sanding. Dry-fit the parts first so that you know where to fill. Fill the seam with modeling putty or with super glue and an accelerator, sand it back and restore the interrupted texture with a scriber. Finally apply a thin coat of primer, ideally gray, which shows up the remaining scratches and unifies the base.

Painting the skin, the beard and the metal

Build the skin up from a mid-tone layer: glazes in the eye sockets, under the cheekbones and in the corners of the mouth, lightening on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and the chin. Oils let you blend the transitions soft, acrylics layer faster. Paint the eyes in an off-white, never a pure white, then the iris, the pupil and the line of the upper eyelid. With Norse subjects a cooler, lighter tone with reddened areas on the nose, the cheeks and the ears works well, a detail that a bust in 1:10 can carry and that gives it life. Start the beard and the hair from a dark base, pick the strands out with a thin brush or a dry brush and leave deep shadows between them; with blond and red shades add the highlights gradually, or the area will go white and lose its volume. The metal elements can be done with translucent metallic paint over a smooth dark base or with non-metallic metal, with a dark glaze into the hollows and a careful lightening on the edges. Pin and glue the finished bust to its base and display it under light from above and in front.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters who want to practice beards, hair and light skin
  • Collectors of Norse and early medieval subjects in 1:10 scale
  • More experienced modelers, since resin calls for washing, cutting and filling
  • Anyone who enjoys combining metal, leather and cloth on one piece

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and putty are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Always from a dark base upward. Add the highlights in thin, thinly diluted coats only on the strands you have picked out. One heavy lightening will flatten the area and the beard will then look like a solid mass.

Acrylics for figures and oil paints alike. Oils have a longer open time, so you can blend the transitions soft; acrylics layer faster. A common solution is an acrylic underpainting with oil modeling over it.

Not in the usual sense. It is a resin casting in several parts for painting. The building is limited to putting the parts together, filling the seams and priming.

Yes. Remains of mold release agent from the mold would prevent the primer and the paint from adhering. Lukewarm soapy water, a soft brush and thorough drying are enough.
