The kit captures the French self-propelled gun SAu 40 in 1:100 scale from the Zebranomodel range. The 1:100 scale is typical of more extensive collections and of tabletop rendering of whole units — the model is small, builds quickly and stores easily, so a whole collection of one army can be built with no demand for a large display case. The number of parts and the material are stated on the box of the kit.
The SAu 40 was a French self-propelled gun project of the late 1930s, built on running gear derived from the medium tank SOMUA S35. The main weapon was housed in the forward hull, that is without a traversing turret with full traverse — the design thereby gained a lower silhouette and could carry a heavier gun than would fit into the French turrets of the day. The vehicle stayed at the prototype stage and did not reach series production before 1940. For a collection it is interesting precisely as an example of French thinking about mobile artillery support, which in its main features resembled the later solutions of other countries.
In 1:100 scale the result is decided while cleaning up the parts: rather cut small moldings off with a scalpel than with nippers, which easily crush a small part. Assemble and paint the running gear before you cover it with the side plates. Laying on a thin base is a necessity — on a small area every heavy coat tells as a loss of detail. French schemes tend to be multicolor with a dark dividing line between the fields; in this scale suggest it with a fine brush or a pencil, not by spraying. Keep the weathering sparing: one dark wash in the recesses, a fine dry brush on the edges and light dust on the underside. The model stands out on a simple base, which gives it scale.
