A model of the British battleship HMS Iron Duke in her 1914 configuration from Flyhawk, a brand that has earned a reputation in 1:700 scale for very delicate shapes and fine detail. The Set Version marking in the name says that this is an extended version of the package compared with the basic release; check on the box what exactly it adds. The scale, the subject and the year to which the configuration of the ship refers all follow from the name.
Iron Duke was the first unit of the battleship class of the same name, which belonged to the end of the dreadnought line of development before the First World War. The main armament consisted of ten 343 mm guns in twin mounts, supplemented by a battery of smaller guns in hull casemates. The ship became the flagship of the British Grand Fleet and in that role took part in the largest naval engagement of the day. The 1914 silhouette is attractive to modelers precisely for its cleanness: tall funnels, a lattice mast and casemate armament without the later rebuilds.
Split the build into hull, deck, superstructure and masts and paint it in blocks — in 1:700 you will not reach a hidden surface afterwards. Fill and sand the hull joints before you start seating the details. British ships of the period look best on a darker gray base with subtle shading of the individual decks and a very careful wash, so that the fine relief does not disappear. Wooden decks are painted in two or three tones so that they do not look flat. The lattice masts and the cranes are the most fragile part of the model; leave them for last. The model looks superb set into a calm water surface, where the long silhouette comes into its own.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
