This kit from the Taiwanese brand AFV Club represents an Oliver Hazard Perry class guided-missile frigate in 1:700 scale. It is one of the most widespread modern escort types of all, so the model will please collectors of present-day surface vessels as well as builders of fleets, where a whole formation can be put together in 1:700. The name does not give a particular ship or the form of the hull; check the number of parts and the contents on the box.
The Oliver Hazard Perry class was created in the 1970s as a numerous and deliberately low-cost frigate for escorting convoys and formations. It is characterized by a long bow with a single launcher, a large hangar and a landing deck for helicopters at the stern, and a superstructure with a single funnel. Beside the US Navy, ships of this class served with further states, to which they were transferred or where they were built under license, and some of them are in active service to this day. For the modeler it is a rewarding shape: a slender hull, clean surfaces and plenty of room for small details.
In 1:700 scale it pays to work in blocks: hull, superstructure, armament and mast separately, each painted before everything is joined together. Fill and sand the hull joints carefully. The gray finish of modern vessels comes alive if the individual surfaces are shaded with a slightly lighter tone and given a fine dark wash in the engraved lines. Railings, radars and cranes look incomparably better in this scale when made from photo-etched parts, which are separate items. The landing deck deserves careful markings, because it draws the eye first. Finally tie everything together with a matte varnish and consider setting the model into a water surface on a small base.
