A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks from the manufacturer New Ware for a model of the attack helicopter AH-64 in the Block II version in 1:48 scale. It is neither a model nor an accessory that could be stuck onto a model permanently — the masks serve to cover surfaces during spraying and are taken off once the painting is done. With this manufacturer the EXPERT designation is the highest grade of extent of a set; the lower grades carry the designations BASIC and ADVANCED and deal with a smaller range of surfaces.
The masks are cut from a thin Japanese paper tape. It has two properties for which it is used in modeling: it follows curved surfaces well, so it can be pressed down even onto convex glazing, and after removal it leaves no residues of adhesive on the surface. At the same time it is impermeable enough to keep paint from a airbrush from creeping under it, provided the edges are pressed down properly.
First degrease the surface and leave it completely dry. Lift the mask off the sheet with tweezers and lay it down starting from one edge, so that it does not ripple. Press the edges down with a toothpick or a blunt wooden stick — that is exactly where it is decided whether the transition of color will be sharp. Spray in thin coats; a thick coat has a tendency to creep under the edge. Take the mask off while the varnish is only dry to the touch, not fully cured, by pulling it back over itself at a sharp angle.
The masks are an aid for painting a model, not a model or a part of one. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
