About product

French M15 helmet 1:72, the detail variant

A small accessory for figures in 1:72 scale, not a figure on its own and not a kit of a model. The set captures the French M15 pattern steel helmet and the manufacturer lists it as a separate variant with the word detail in its name. The manufacturer also makes a basic version of the same helmet in the same scale, so check which designation the box carries.

The real subject

The French steel helmet of the 1915 pattern was among the first steel helmets introduced in series during the First World War. The shell was shallow, rounded out by a short peak at the front and the back and by a lengthwise comb on the crown, which covered a ventilation opening. Besides the French army a number of other countries used it in the same or a slightly altered form, and it stayed in service well into the interwar period. It is precisely the comb and the rim running round the shell that are the details by which the fineness of a helmet in a small scale is judged.

Fitting, cleanup and painting

Cut the original headgear off the figure with a scalpel and level the crown with a file, so that the new helmet seats with no gap. Try the part dry first, line the comb up with the axis of the head and check the angle of the peak above the face. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and the gap round the rim is filled with a thin strip of two-part putty. Spray the whole thing with a primer before painting. Finely modeled edges show best when painting starts from a darker base: the base shade, a dark wash into the recesses around the comb and the rim and a very light drybrush on the raised surfaces. Draw a darker tone under the peak, so that a shadow forms above the face.

Who the set is for

  • builders of First World War and interwar dioramas in 1:72
  • modelers who care about how finely small details are rendered
  • conversions of figures into French dress
  • more experienced modelers working with very small parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the figure itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The manufacturer makes both variants as separate items, and this one carries the word detail in its name. Check the difference between them on the box.

It was introduced during the First World War and stayed in service well into the interwar period. The French army and a number of other countries used it.

It is not. It is an accessory meant for altering a figure in 1:72 scale that you already have.

Paint from a darker base toward lighter edges. A dark wash run around the comb and the rim and a very light drybrush on the raised surfaces will pull the detail out best.
