The USS Des Moines, with the hull designation CA-134, is the lead ship of the American heavy cruiser class of the same name. It was the last generation of large gun cruisers of the US Navy, with main armament in the form of turrets with 8-inch guns. The sister ship Salem comes as a separate kit from the same maker, so a pair in the same scale can be built. For modelers these ships are interesting for their broken-up superstructures and densely placed lighter armament — and it is exactly there that a detail set shows the most.
Lay the build out in advance: parts that end up under superstructures or inside the structure have to come up before the model is closed. Try everything dry. Small parts are easier to paint before they are seated, on a stand or on double-sided tape. Glue thin elements with a minimum of cyanoacrylate glue, so that a white film does not appear around the joint; the excess is hard to remove. Apply the paint in thin coats, otherwise the detail will be rounded off. At the end a fine dark wash into the vertical edges and very sparing highlighting of the deck areas will help.
