A set of fine photo-etched parts in thin metal sheet, intended for American twin-engine and four-engine bombers in 1:144 scale. The package contains four pieces of the AS-27/ARN-5 type antenna, that is, a mast antenna with crossbars of the kind that appeared on the fuselage of these aircraft. Injected plastic cannot manage a structure this thin in a small scale, and the parts from the box tend either to be too thick or to be missing entirely. Photo-etched metal has both the right thickness and a sharp outline. It is an accessory to a kit, not a standalone model.
Antennas of this type belonged to the radio equipment of American bombers of the Second World War and were connected with the receiver of a landing guidance system. On both the B-25 Mitchell and the B-17 Flying Fortress it was a small but prominent detail on the surface of the fuselage that is clearly visible in period photographs. It is precisely such small things that set a model built straight from the box apart from a machine that looks convincing even from close up.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch scissors on a hard surface and never tear them out with your fingers, as they would bend. Sand the remainder of the tab lightly with a small file or a sanding sponge after separation. Do the forming with flat tweezers or a small bending jig, as the metal is thin and will take only one accurate bend. It is bonded with super glue applied with the tip of a pin, so that the drop does not run over the surface. The metal is smooth, so apply a primer before painting, otherwise the paint will rub off during handling. We recommend fitting the antennas only once the painting and varnishing of the fuselage are complete, so that they do not break off.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
