About product

Early version wheels for the A.W. Argosy in 1:144

This add-on set from Armory is made for models of the British Armstrong Whitworth Argosy transport aircraft in 1:144 and matches the early version. A resin casting carries a finer tread and sidewall pattern than you can expect from a small injection-molded part, and the tire has sag cast in where it touches the runway. The finished model then stands on the surface instead of hovering above it. The set is an add-on to a kit, not a model of the aircraft.

The real subject

The Armstrong Whitworth Argosy is a British transport aircraft with a characteristic twin-boom tail layout and four turboprop engines, used in civil freight work as well as in military service. Loading doors at both the front and the rear allowed cargo to be handled quickly, which made the type a practical freighter of its day. Its operating weight and frequent use from less prepared surfaces placed heavier demands on the landing gear, whose wheels are clearly visible on a model.

Usage and painting tips

The castings are small in 1:144, so work with tweezers over a light surface. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw and sand the cut; set the contact patch against a flat board before gluing so that the model does not stand crooked. Wash the parts in warm water with dish soap before painting and let them dry, otherwise paint holds badly on the remains of mold release agent. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, as cement for plastic has no grip on resin. Paint the tire dark gray and flatten the surface down, then finish the hub with a brush around the rim. On a freighter it pays to hint at dust and traces of service on the contact patch; apply pigment sparingly. Protect your airways when sanding resin.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Argosy models in 1:144
  • Anyone interested in airliners and transport aircraft for the display case
  • Modelers bothered by the unloaded plastic wheels from the box
  • Those who want to improve the look of a model without a conversion

This is an add-on to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an add-on set of wheels that you use during the build in place of the plastic parts. The kit itself is not in the package.

The set matches the earlier pattern of wheel. Choose by the machine you are building.

Cut off the casting block, level the cut, wash in warm water with dish soap, dry and apply primer. Then they are painted with ordinary modeling paints.

With cyanoacrylate glue, or with epoxy. Cement for plastic does not work on this material.
