About product

D.H.106 Comet 4C 1:144 — Amodel, airliner kit

The kit captures a late version of the legendary British jet airliner de Havilland D.H.106 Comet, specifically the Comet 4C variant, in 1:144 scale. The maker is the Ukrainian company Amodel, which specializes in short-run injection-molded models of less common types. The package holds injection-molded plastic sprues, extra parts cast in resin and a sheet of water-slide decals. It is a classic kit for modelers who want to add a type that only rarely appears in the usual range to a collection of airliners in 1:144.

The real subject

The de Havilland Comet was the first jet airliner in the world to enter scheduled service. After the airframe was reworked, the successful Comet 4 series appeared with Rolls-Royce Avon engines buried in the wing roots. The Comet 4C version combined the lengthened cabin derived from the 4B variant with the wing and fuel tanks of the long-range Comet 4 — the result was an aircraft with a large capacity and a decent range, suited to medium and longer routes. The Comet 4C flew with a number of carriers in the Middle East, in North Africa and in Latin America, and in a derived form it also served in the military transport role.

Building and painting tips

This is a short-run kit, so expect the parts not to fit as precisely as those of the big brands. It pays to dry-fit everything first, to clean up the mating surfaces and to glue in stages. Wash the mold release residue off the resin parts and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. The fuselage of an airliner calls for perfectly smoothed seams: fill them, sand them with fine paper and polish the surface, because a glossy white-and-silver scheme brings out every irregularity. Spray a gloss clear coat before the decals and apply the long cheatline stripes in sections with a decal softener.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of airliners in 1:144 scale
  • Fans of British aviation and of the history of jet transport
  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • Builders of display cases on the development of civil jet aviation

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It combines the lengthened cabin derived from the 4B version with the wing and tanks of the long-range Comet 4. It therefore offered a higher capacity while keeping a decent range.

Rather not. It is a short-run model, the parts need cleaning up and dry-fitting, and the smooth glossy scheme of an airliner is demanding on surface preparation.

They are extra components cast in resin. Wash the mold release residue off them before gluing and use cyanoacrylate glue; cement for plastic has no effect on them.

There are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints, glue and any masks are bought separately.
