About product

DHC-6 Twin Otter Worldwide Military Service in 1:144 scale by Mark I

The kit covers the DHC-6 Twin Otter twin-engined turboprop in 1:144 scale, that is in the size usual for collections of transport aircraft and for models of airfields. According to the name, this version is aimed at machines in military service with users all over the world. The manufacturer issues this type in several marking versions, which differ from one another precisely in the contents of the decal sheet, so a collector can build several machines from one mold and still have a different aircraft each time.

The real subject

The De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a twin-engined turboprop with short takeoff and landing ability, which came about in the mid-1960s as a versatile machine for difficult terrain. A high-set wing, fixed landing gear and the ability to operate from short and unpaved surfaces made it one of the most widespread machines of its class. It flies with airlines and with armed forces, in versions on wheels, skis and floats, and does so from the Arctic to tropical islands. The nickname Twotter, which the aircraft was given among its crews, caught on so well that it even appears in the names of modeling sets.

Building and painting tips

In 1:144 scale the cleanliness of the surface decides, because every remnant of glue is clearly visible over a small area. So glue the parts with a thin cement for plastic that is drawn into the joint by capillary action, and then only sand the joints gently. The cockpit is most practical to mask and spray with the fuselage, and at this size a mask cut from adhesive tape serves well. Light aircraft finishes call for a good primer, otherwise the color of the plastic shows through. Lay a gloss varnish down before the decals and, once it has dried, draw the surface together with a semi-gloss varnish. Choose the weathering sparingly; on a transport aircraft it is enough to suggest the traces of exhaust gases and a rubbed wing leading edge.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of transport and utility aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • Collectors of military transport and liaison aircraft
  • Modelers who build airfields or a scene in a small scale
  • Anyone interested in aircraft for operation from short and unpaved surfaces

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
