About product

Dornier Do-17Z Battle of Britain in 1:144 scale from Mark I Models

An injection-molded plastic kit of the twin-engine Dornier Do 17 bomber in the Z-series configuration, worked out in 1:144 scale by the Czech manufacturer Mark I Models. The boxing is thematically tied to the deployment over Britain in 1940. Check the package contents and the number of schemes offered on the box.

The real subject

The Do 17 came about in the mid-1930s as a fast aircraft with a slender fuselage, which earned it the nickname flying pencil because of its shape. The Z series differed fundamentally from the older ones: it received a reworked, markedly glazed and widened nose with a common space for the whole crew, and instead of inline engines it used radial powerplants. The bomber had decent speed but a fairly small load-carrying capacity and range, which told over Britain in 1940. The Do 17Z was then one of the three main bomber types deployed over the islands, and during the war it was gradually replaced by more modern machines.

Building and painting tips

The most demanding place is the glazed nose. Leave the clear part until the end, glue it with cement for clear plastics and rather paint the frames with a brush than mask them, because in 1:144 masking tape is often wider than the frame itself. Anyone comparing the work with the more common 1:72 scale will appreciate that the fuselage joints are shorter and filling is quicker, but every unevenness shows more, because the eye takes in the whole model at once. German camouflage with hard transitions is well handled at this scale by masking with modeling putty or raised tape, as a soft transition with an airbrush tends to be unmanageably wide over such an area. Spray the light lower surfaces first and only then mask.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers focused on the air events over Britain in 1940
  • Collectors of twin-engine bombers in a single small scale
  • Builders who want a large aircraft without demands on display case space
  • Anyone interested in short-run kits with a greater share of handwork

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Above all in the reworked glazed nose with a common space for the crew and in the switch to radial engines instead of inline ones.

Glue the clear part with a specialized cement for clear plastics and rather pick the frames out with a thin brush. Masking tape tends to be wider than the frame itself at this scale.
