An injection-molded plastic kit from the Chinese maker Great Wall Hobby dating from 2018, that is from new tooling. Besides the plastic sprues, the box holds a photo-etched sheet and a decal sheet with several marking options. With a subject this large the 1:144 scale pays off: the model has a span of around thirty-eight centimeters, a size that still fits in an ordinary display cabinet, whereas in a larger scale it would be a piece for a table of its own. The photo-etched parts meanwhile leave room for a more demanding build.
The Me 323 Gigant was a German heavy transport aircraft of the Second World War, created by adding engines to a large cargo glider. The structure remained typical of its origin: a lattice fuselage of steel tubes covered with fabric and a huge wing whose span exceeded fifty meters. The D version received six French-built radial engines. The cargo hold was extraordinary for its day: the aircraft could carry a load on the order of ten tons and was loaded through front doors in the nose, so vehicles could be driven inside or a gun loaded. The price for that load was low speed and poor maneuverability, which made the machine very vulnerable. It was used above all on the supply routes over the Mediterranean and to North Africa in 1942 and 1943, where it suffered heavy losses.
In 1:144 scale clean work decides everything: sand the fuselage seams and the wing leading edges smooth, work on the small parts with a sharp knife and apply the glue drop by drop with the tip so that it does not run. The six engine nacelles and the landing gear with its many wheels deserve to be built step by step and checked as you go so that the model stands square. Apply a thin base coat before painting, as a heavy layer would drown the fine detail at this scale. The fabric covering of the fuselage comes out best with subtle accenting of the ribs, and keep the patina restrained. Apply the decals over a gloss interim coat and seal them with a matte one, as silvering shows up easily on small areas.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
