A stand-alone sheet of waterslide decals for 1:144 scale. It carries the markings of the South African Air Force in three type forms, which are designated Type A, Type A1 and Type B. The package holds two identical sets.
The designations are not arbitrary but belong to the settled typology of concentric roundels that the other air forces of the Commonwealth adopted as well. Type A is the basic multi-color concentric insignia. Type A1 is the same insignia supplemented with an outer contrasting outline, which was used on the sides of the fuselage so that the insignia stood out against the camouflage. Type B is the simplified two-color form with lower contrast, intended mainly for the upper surfaces, where it was desirable not to give the aircraft away from above. The practical impact on the build is fundamental: according to which phase of service and which surface you are modeling, you have to reach for a different type, and the sheet gives you that whole choice at once.
Multi-color concentric insignia give away every imprecision in the registration, so look at the sheet against the light before you start and check whether the circles are concentric. Prepare the surface with a gloss varnish. Cut the insignia out close to the edge of the printing, so that as little clear film as possible is left. Soak it, bring it up to the place and adjust the position with a brush. Draw the water off from the center toward the edges and, over rivets or a panel line, help the decal with a softener. Apply the roundels for the upper surfaces and the sides of the fuselage in one session, so that the alignment against the longitudinal axis matches.
This is a stand-alone decal sheet, not a kit. The model, paints, varnish and softener are not included in the package.
