About product

Kabuki masks for the 1:144 Tu-160 Blackjack, EXPERT level

A masking set for a 1:144 model of the Tu-160 bomber. The parts are machine die-cut from kabuki tape, so nothing has to be traced or cut out with a scalpel. EXPERT is the level of the set and within the range it is the widest variant, covering more surfaces than the basic level. The level is exactly what tells otherwise similarly named sets apart, so watch for it when choosing. The masks are cut for the Zvezda 7002 and Academy 12621 kits.

The real subject

The Tu-160 is a four-engine supersonic aircraft with variable-geometry wings and a long, smoothly shaped fuselage. The engine nacelles sit under the wing carry-through and the tail surfaces are tall and slender. In 1:144 scale the model has a respectable span, but the details that get masked stay small, and the larger the area of single-color paint the model carries, the more an imprecise edge or a bleed shows on it.

Use and tips

Degrease the surface before the masks go on and let the paint cure completely, because masking over fresh paint is a bad idea. Seat the parts with tweezers, press them down carefully around the edge and only then start spraying. A first thin coat of the underlying color over the edge of the mask is worth the effort: it seals the border and any bleed will not show. Pull the tape off at a shallow angle, away from the edge, not straight up. On larger areas between the masks use ordinary masking tape or film to fill in.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to mask more widely than just the glazing.
  • Builders of large aircraft in small scale, where every inaccuracy shows.
  • Those who spray with an airbrush and want sharp edges with no touching up.
  • More experienced modelers for whom the basic level of the set is not enough.

The masks are a painting aid. The kit and the paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

In the range of masked surfaces. EXPERT is the widest variant within the range, BASIC covers the basics. The specific list of parts follows the data given by the manufacturer.

For large continuous areas between the die-cut parts, yes. The die-cut masks take care of the precise shapes and the rest is filled in with tape or film.

In normal use, no. Kabuki tape has low tack. What matters is masking only over fully cured paint and lifting the mask off soon after it has dried.

It works that way too, but it comes into its own with an airbrush, where a sharp border between two shades is the point.
