A printed display base for models with the motif of an airfield apron, produced in 1:144 scale. It takes the place of the bare board of a display case or a workbench and gives a model the setting in which the real subject actually moved. The motif is pitched at the airfields of the Warsaw Pact countries, that is the military alliance of the Eastern Bloc in the Cold War.
It is most often used under finished models of aircraft and helicopters in 1:144 scale, where the area takes up only a small piece of a table and yet can close a scene off. It also comes into its own as a background when photographing a model, because it removes the distracting surface of a table, and as a quick foundation for a simple diorama, to which you need only add crew, equipment and small airfield fittings.
Lay the base on a flat and clean surface so that it does not rumple under the model, and store it flat rather than rolled. Simply stand the model on it; leave permanent gluing until the moment the scene is finished. When photographing, choose light from one side and keep the camera low, roughly at the height of the model, otherwise the photograph becomes a view from above and the sense of scale is lost. The transition between the edge of the base and the table is hidden by a display case or by a strip laid around the perimeter.
It will be appreciated by collectors of aviation subjects in 1:144 scale who want to display models in a larger whole without building a full diorama. Models, figures and other equipment are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
