Faithfully painted wood grain is among the most laborious parts of building a model from the First World War period. This set from HGW settles the problem differently: you get the wood structure in a dark wood shade as a decal that is simply applied to a prepared surface. According to its name the set is cut for the Sopwith Camel in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit but an accessory for a model.
The Sopwith Camel was a British fighter biplane with a rotary engine, whose pair of machine guns was hidden under a cover ahead of the cockpit — that hump also gave the aircraft its name. Airframes of the period were built from a wooden frame, plywood and fabric, so wood was visible on the machine in places on view and modelers have to imitate it somehow. That is exactly what decals with wood grain are for: they give the surface a structure and a graduation of color that are hard to achieve with a brush, and above all hard to achieve evenly.
First paint the area with a base color and let it dry thoroughly, then go over it with gloss varnish. A glossy, smooth base is crucial with decals — on a matte surface air stays under the film and white silvering appears. Cut the piece of decal to the shape of the area with a small margin, soak it in lukewarm water, let the film release and slide it into place. Press the water out with a cotton swab from the center to the edges and trim the excess at the edges with a fresh blade. Over ribs, edges and curves a decal softener helps the film to stretch and follow the shape; once applied, do not touch the decal until it is dry. At the end, go over the area with satin or matte varnish depending on how glossy you want the wood — and fine-tune any shade with a thin oil glaze.
