A figure of a German officer in 1:16 scale from Das Werk. The theme is the Western Front, specifically the Ardennes at the turn of 1944 and 1945. The 1:16 scale is among the largest for figures: with an adult figure the model comes out at roughly eleven centimeters, so every seam, buckle and brush stroke shows on it. That is exactly what makes figures in this format a rewarding object for painters who want to show their work on a face and on materials.
Sturmbannführer was a rank designation used in the Waffen-SS, equivalent in standing to a major. In December 1944 and January 1945 the Ardennes were the scene of a large-scale winter offensive on the Western Front. For a modeler what follows from that is above all the typical setting of that time and that place: low temperatures, snow, mud and winter dress, to which the treatment of the base and the weathering correspond as well.
A large scale forgives little. Before painting, clean the mold parting lines up carefully and try a dry assembly, so that the head, the torso and the limbs seat on one another exactly. Use an undercoat primer, ideally a lighter one for the skin and a darker one for the uniform. Build the face up in layers: the base, the shadows into the hollows, the highlights on the raised areas, the eyes at the very end and with the finest brush possible. For smooth transitions on the uniform, oil paints or acrylics thinned into glazes work well in this format. A final matte varnish will unify the surface; the leather and metal parts can then be picked out in spots with a gloss.
