The Do 217 J-1/2 MARKING kabuki masks 1:48 set from New Ware - pre-cut masks for sprayed markings, that is, an alternative to decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
This set is different from ordinary canopy masks: as the MARKING designation says, it is meant for masking markings, which are then sprayed with paint instead of being transferred by decal. The masks are stuck onto an already painted and varnished surface of a model, the shade of the insignia is sprayed over them and once dry they are taken off. It is an accessory for the kit of the Do 217 J-1/2 in 1:48 scale, not a stand-alone model.
A decal lies on the surface as a thin film, and with an imperfect surface underneath a glossy rim appears around it, which is called silvering. Sprayed markings are part of the finish, so they do not have that problem, they take a sharper patina and they do not peel off during sanding or a wash. The drawback is that they call for more careful work with the masks and for precise placement.
The surface underneath must be smooth and well dried - on fresh paint a mask sticks too hard and pulls it away. Press a mask down around its whole perimeter, spray several very thin layers and let each dry in between. A heavy layer in one pass is the main reason paint creeps under an edge. Take it off with tweezers with a pull at an angle and level out any transition with a matte or semi-gloss overcoat.
The set is cut for a particular kit of the type in question. The paints, the varnish and the model are not included in the package.
