The shade belongs to the open Porsche 936 prototype in the version for the 1977 season. White on it was not a complement but the whole base of the body, across which the colored stripes of a sponsor finish only then ran.
It was an open Group 6 spider with a turbocharged flat-six mounted behind the driver's back. In the twenty-four hours at Le Mans in 1977 the car fell deep into the field because of technical trouble and worked its way back to the front only by a persistent night charge, which is among the most quoted turnarounds in the history of that race. The 936 type also celebrated outright victory in the 1976 and 1981 editions, so it is one of the most successful prototypes of its era. The endurance machines of that time built on small displacement with heavy forced induction, and their durability after twenty-four hours was always an open question.
It suits builders of endurance machinery who need a calm white as a surface for stripes and numbers. With finishes made up of thin bands it is exactly the ground that decides, because the colored stripes show through it and any unevenness of tone tells on them. A light surface also gets on well with masking, because the edge of an exposed spot is clearly visible on it. On the real subject the white stayed on the inner sides of the covers and on the bulkheads around the engine as well, where a brush reaches worse than an airbrush.
