TERRAFORM Volcanic Rock Medium, scatter with a middle grade

A loose scatter material from the TERRAFORM range by the Spanish brand AMMO of Mig Jimenez. It is not a model and not a finished scenic object, but a material that you pour onto a diorama, a display base or a wargaming base and fix in place yourself. The Volcanic Rock version is aimed at volcanic terrain: fields of clinker, the cracked crust of cooled lava and slopes covered in fine fragmented material.

The designation Medium marks the middle grade within the range. On a volcanic scene it is the all-purpose step, covering the main areas of terrain so that they are noticeably grainy without falling apart into individual boulders. A volcanic landscape also works mainly through texture and contrast, so an even middle grain with pronounced toning is usually enough.

Use

• Shape the terrain from a base material first and let it cure; the scatter is applied only to the finished shape.
• Spread the material in a thin layer and only then fix it, usually with thinned PVA glue and a drop of dish soap dripped with a pipette over a moistened surface.
• Leave open spots in the terrain where the base shows through; an unbroken surface of scatter looks monotonous.
• Match the shade only after it has dried: washes bring out the hollows, dry brushing picks out the edges and gives the scene depth.
• Set the vegetation and the model itself in place at the very end.
