A set of shaped pre-cut painting masks for a model of the KamAZ-43509 heavy truck in 1:43 scale. It holds no parts of the vehicle. It is used when spraying, to produce a crisp edge around the cab glazing, at the headlights and at the boundary between two shades.
From a modeling point of view the cab of a heavy truck is the most demanding part of the paintwork. The windshield is large and curved, the side windows have narrow frames and the headlights sit in a recess, so masking tape cannot be pressed down reliably in a corner. A pre-cut mask follows the shape of the part and keeps the same frame width around the whole perimeter. The set is useful as well on striking two-tone schemes where the dividing line runs across the hood and the side panel and has to stay crisp.
Wash the clear parts, degrease them and let them dry. Press the mask down from the center toward the edges and push it into the corners with a blunt tip. Apply the paint in thin coats, otherwise a ridge forms at the edge. Take the mask off at a shallow angle backward before the finish has fully cured. On gloss schemes it pays to go over the finished paint with a thin coat of clear varnish, and the transition then disappears even to the touch.
