About product

SX-Art 1:72 mask set for the Short Sunderland Mk.III

A mask set from SX-Art in 1:72 scale for a model of the Short Sunderland Mk.III flying boat. It is not a kit, but a set of self-adhesive masks cut to shape for the glazed areas of the model. On a large multi-engine flying boat it is an exceptionally useful aid, because there is a great deal of glazing on it and cutting every frame out of tape by hand takes a whole evening.

The real subject

The Short Sunderland was a British four-engine flying boat used for maritime patrol and against submarines. The Mk.III differed from the earlier machines in the revised shape of the planing bottom of the hull. The aircraft had a cabin with extensive glazing, glazed gun turrets and a row of small windows along the sides of the fuselage, so a model of it has far more clear parts than an ordinary fighter. Operating off the water left its mark on the hulls of the real machines in salt staining and wear, which is a rewarding subject for weathering a model.

How to use the masks

First degrease the clear part and let it dry perfectly; keep your fingers off the visible surface, as a print shows through the paint. Lift an individual mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on the glass and press it down from the center toward the edges so that no air bubble is left underneath. Then run a toothpick around the edge as well, because it is exactly how tightly the edge seats that decides whether the paint transition will be crisp. Spray thinly and in several coats, as a thick coat tends to tear away beyond the edge of the mask when it is peeled off. A proven sequence is to spray the interior shade of the cabin framing first and only then the covering outer color. Lift the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured completely, because after a longer time the adhesive comes away less easily.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want crisp canopy framing without brushwork by hand
  • Builders in small scale, where cutting tape for tiny frames is tedious
  • Those who spray with an airbrush and need a repeatably clean edge
  • Beginners, for whom masking the canopy is the hardest part of the build

FAQ

It is not. It is a mask set, a set of masks cut to shape that are stuck onto the parts of the model before spraying. Neither the model itself nor paints are included in the package.

The masks are cut to the shape of the particular kit the set is intended for. On a model from another manufacturer, or on another mold of the same type, they usually do not seat accurately, so check which kit you are building first.

Lift them with tweezers at a sharp angle shortly after the paint has dried to the touch. If you wait for the finish to cure completely, the adhesive holds harder and the coat may lift with the mask.

Count on single use. Once lifted off, the edge loses its grip, and on a second application it no longer seats tightly enough to hold a crisp transition.
