A mask set from SX-Art in 1:72 scale for a model of the D.520 fighter. It is not a kit, but a set of self-adhesive masks cut to shape for the clear parts of the model. The masks follow the shape of the canopy framing of one particular kit, so you get a crisp paint edge even in a small scale, where cutting tape by hand is tedious and inaccurate.
The Dewoitine D.520 was a French single-engine fighter of the late 1930s. It was powered by a liquid-cooled Hispano-Suiza V12 engine, and its main weapon was a cannon firing through the hollow propeller shaft, supplemented by machine guns in the wing. It was the most capable French fighter to reach the units in any numbers before 1940. The type is marked by a slender fuselage and a fairly small, heavily framed canopy, and that is exactly where a mask set saves the most work.
First degrease the clear part and let it dry perfectly; keep your fingers off the visible surface, as a print shows through the paint. Lift an individual mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on the glass and press it down from the center toward the edges so that no air bubble is left underneath. Then run a toothpick around the edge as well, because it is exactly how tightly the edge seats that decides whether the paint transition will be crisp. Spray thinly and in several coats, as a thick coat tends to tear away beyond the edge of the mask when it is peeled off. A proven sequence is to spray the interior shade of the cabin framing first and only then the covering outer color. Lift the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured completely, because after a longer time the adhesive comes away less easily.
