A mask set from SX-Art in 1:72 scale for a model of the Su-33 carrier fighter. It is not a kit and not a replacement part: these are self-adhesive masks cut to shape that you stick onto the clear canopy and onto the other areas that are to stay transparent after spraying. The set is cut to the shape of one particular kit, so it follows the framing of the canopy and the tedious cutting of masking tape falls away.
The Sukhoi Su-33 is a carrier-borne fighter derived from the Su-27. For operating off a ship's deck it received folding outer wing panels and folding tailplanes, strengthened landing gear, a tailhook and canard foreplanes ahead of the wing leading edge, which improve its behavior at low speeds. It is powered by two turbojets. Its characteristic feature is precisely this combination of canards and a large canopy, so masking the glazing is one of the most visible details of a model of the type.
First degrease the clear part and let it dry perfectly; keep your fingers off the visible surface, as a print shows through the paint. Lift an individual mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on the glass and press it down from the center toward the edges so that no air bubble is left underneath. Then run a toothpick around the edge as well, because it is exactly how tightly the edge seats that decides whether the paint transition will be crisp. Spray thinly and in several coats, as a thick coat tends to tear away beyond the edge of the mask when it is peeled off. A proven sequence is to spray the interior shade of the cabin framing first and only then the covering outer color. Lift the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured completely, because after a longer time the adhesive comes away less easily.
